Georgian cuisine is just epic and here are the must try food in Georgia without which your trip is incomplete. One of my main reasons to visit this country is because of tired of seeing all those amazing Khachapuri photos on my social media without having tried it. Little did I know that Georgian cuisine is so much more diverse than what we see on social media and consists of deliciously amazing food (to read more about my trip check out my post 4 Day In Georgia). Here are 8 of my most favourite foods in Georgia:
Table of Contents
Khinkali
It is merely impossible to miss a Khinkali, itβs the most famous dish of Georgia and itβs available almost everywhere in the country. Khiinkali is basically Georgian dumplings which come with a variety of fillings. If you eat this with a fork and knife, youβre basically screaming ‘TOURIST’, you got to get your hands dirty to eat it in the proper way. Hold a khinkali from the small portion, take a bite on the side and slurp up all the juices inside before you hog off the rest of it. Meat and Mushroom are the most popular flavors but there are other choices to choose from as well. So whether you are a vegetarian or not, there is a khinkali for you.
Where to try it?
Itβs available almost everywhere in Georgia, my recommendation, Pasanauri Restaurant in Old Tbilisi
Khachapuri
Youβve seen it on social media, youβve seen it on the posters around the city and it tastes exactly how you want it to taste. Bread, gorgeous amounts of cheese and an egg, there is nothing not to like. The stereotypical cheeseboat is what is called the Adarjali Khachapuri but there are many other varieties of khachapuris which are worth trying as well. Adarjali (cheeseboat), Lobiani (Beans), Kubdari (Meat) are just some of the famous types of khachapuris in Georgia.
Where to try it?
Passanauri, we had the best khachapuri here
Churchkela
The Georgian candy, a readily available street snack sold all over the country. Churchkela is a string of walnuts threaded together and covered in thickened grape juice. They are made in many flavors, but the Grape flavor was my favorite and is meant be the most traditional one.
Where to try it?
Mtskheta Market, although itβs available everywhere in the country.
Badrijai Nigvzit (Eggplant rolls with Walnut Paste)
I found my favorite vegetarian food, a hidden gem which Google failed to tell me about. Sauteed eggplant slices rolled and stuffed with a walnut filling which was worth dying for, even for a hard core meat lover like me. We first had Badrijai Nigvzit in our guesthouse in Kazebegi and made sure that we ordered in every single restaurant henceforth.
Where to try it?
Barbarestan Restaurant and Pasanauri Restaurant is where we had the best ones, but every Georgian restaurant serves it.
Madame Bovary
We came across this dish by chance in a restaurant in Kazbegi. The description on the menu said, cheese, chicken, potatoes and mushrooms, we were sold on that even though we were not that hungry. The creaminess of the meat and vegetables on the inside with melted cheese on top was one hearty lunch, one that requires a nap after. We ended up wiping the entire plate clean.
Where to try it?
Shorenaβs Bar and Restaurant in Kazbegi.
Shkmeruli (Chicken cooked in milk and garlic sauce)
For all the chicken lovers, this one is for you. Tender pieces of chicken in a rich gravy cooked with a creamy sauce, perfect example of Europe meets Asia in a plate. It is always served in a sizzling plate with Georgian bread and a salad. The first time we had it was at our guesthouse in Kazbegi,
Where to try it?
Any Georgian Restaurant, the one in Pasanauri looked pretty tempting but we had no space for it.
Tkemali Sauce
God bless Mate from Fellini Travels for introducing us to this epic sauce. Tkemali is a sauce made from sour red (or green) plums. Itβs thick and sour and goes well with literally everything. Now Iβm going to give you a foodie hack which nobody would normally give, order tkemali sauce with khinkalis, once you slurp away the juice from the khinkali, pour in some tkemali sauce and thank me when you take the first bite. This sauce was so good that I got a big bottle of it back home with me.
Where to try it?
Passanauri
Pipeβs Signature Burger
This isnβt really Georgian but it was a really damn good burger. If you do visit Fabrika Hostel during your stay, which you really have to, this is what you should be looking forward to. Pipes Burger Joint is located in the courtyard of Fabrika Hostel and itβs the perfect combination of juicy meat and fresh vegetables smothered in cheese and their signature sauce.

Pipes Burger Joint @ Fabrika
And thatβs it, my 8 highly recommended must try food in Georgia. I could really use some Georgian Food right about now.
